i think it's mostly the fact that he can't write anything but Mary Sue's. and i hated being told how to feel. generation x and shampoo planet both seemed to me like long treatises on how he feels about things and why it's ridiculous for anyone else to feel any differently...unless they're an ANTI ART PHILISTINE!
on the other hand, i agreed so much with your post on The Lovely Bones that I printed it out and mailed it to my former english teacher, who refused to let me do my independent study on "even cowgirls get the blues" because it was "too graphic", but made everyone in her class read this piece of poo. so thank you for speaking truth to power, if by power i mean "best-selling piece of shit novels". :)
