Okay, I'm feeling better.
How did I not hear about this controversy? (Picture here.) Or is it not a controversy but just something Wills made up? Whatever. You're all fired.*
I would have gone with "Loch Ness Monster" too, actually.
I kind of want to rant about some annoying buzzkill "Watchmen will suck and if you're excited you suck" pre-movie downers, but I don't feel like it and it's really not more deep than "Man, why you have to ruin my fun?"
Still, I resent the implication that because I'm looking forward to this I don't think deeply about the book and probably skipped the text sections or whatever. Bah. Also, Jesus, do you know how often Hollywood fucks up all-text classics? Like maybe how the most famous version of Wuthering Heights cut out half the book? Come on, now.
*The LoEG fandom is hiring. OMG! Part one of Century comes out in April. ARE YOU EXCITED? I AM TOTALLY EXCITED!

That's the first I've heard of any "controversy" and...I don't see it either? Maybe the Watchmen movie has so much male nudity that anyone who comes out of the theater sees dicks everywhere?
I'm kinda frustrated with the attempted buzz killings in the Watchmen fandom too. Not that the movie's beyond criticism (of course most of us still haven't SEEN it yet) but I have no patience for the "You're not a TRUE FAN if..." attitude. (As totally awesome and welcoming as some fans are, I think Watchmen is the only fandom I've seen where fans get mad at other fans if they have any fun at all. Weird.)

Haha yes, I've seen the Demi Moore version of The Scarlet Letter, very little in abridged film adaptations can shake me. I was thinking about book-to-film adaptations the other day while watching East of Eden. It skipped right to the second half of the book and it still stood on its own legs as a very good film. (I also started making Cal Trask/Walter Kovacs comparisons in my head, which is just nutty. Ah, English majors.)

I think they're referring to the white area between the blobs. It's really malformed penis that I wouldn't have noticed if they hadn't pointed it out, honestly.

LOL. I think some of it comes from kneejerk defensiveness over the medium itself always being in a war for the respect of the masses. And this book has had "classic" status for 20 years and its legend as the unfilmable graphic novel and this is going to be people's exposure to the story and ... yeah, they've sort of convinced themselves of its sacredness.
Although that doesn't explain why they're freaking out about, say, Patrick Wilson not being fat enough considering that it's a small sin compared to how Frank Miller pretty much bludgeoned the shit out of The Spirit or that utterly bullshit League of Extraordinary Gentlemen adaptation. Hell, the vaginal squid not being around isn't as big an insult as those two movies, really.
I think at the very least we're going to get three great performances out of this movie (Haley, Wilson and Morgan) and people are going to come away with an idea of what the actual comic is like. Which is what, say, Persepolis was able to do and The Spirit totally wasn't.
(And speaking of Persepolis, that was an adaptation that totally took out my favorite part of the book and I still enjoyed it. Plus, it was a way to expose my Dad to the story.)

Oh God, that movie. I don't even like The Scarlet Letter, but from everything I heard that was like the "Sam Hamm" version.
