What I liked about Life After God was, while I can see your deal about the self-indulgence, I did like the idea it set forth that you CAN find beauty and meaning in ordinary, commercial, suburban life if you look hard enough. And I really liked that because I'm not all that impressed with writers who are like, "AARGH! Life is so hard! I have to go to the SUPERMARKET instead of go out in the woods and paint!" or whatever I thought it was a nice change. The last chapter was very memorable, too.
