So maybe I ought to talk about my life for once.
Good news: I have a new apartment now. Location is about 200% more optimal for job-wise ... less so for the new crew I have been attempting to join (and met with once), but I'll deal. It's a super-cute place above a business (not a restaurant, I'm not suicidal) ... it's the kind of apartment that wants, like, beaded hang-y things on the walls and not my nerd posters. Maybe I'll find some kind of compromise.
I've made a stab at packing ... so far I've just got books and DVDs ... I might try to go through clothes tonight. It would be a good time to dry clean some stuff that's never been cleaned, like, ever. I wish I could bring some stuff back to New Jersey I don't need anymore, but oh well.
Work is ... okay. Some stories are keeping me busy and head-desking. I think I'm getting better. But I could improve ...
Oh, and I write a column, now. Cool, huh? So far I've only written two entries, but I already have an approved idea for a third. So that's good.
Um ... my grandmother's wedding ended up being the extreme in anti-fun. But she and her now-husband seem very happy, so that's what's important.
And ... wow, I guess that's all I really have to say. Except that I'm kind of having trouble finding times to do things I really SHOULD be doing. I need a doctor or two ... I haven't found one yet. I also never got my car CD fix. I can't find any place that specializes in this ... it really sucks. :-(
Other than that, I read the original The 101 Dalmatians book this weekend. I liked it, but I kept comparing it to the animated film. (I really couldn't stand the live action version.)
Overall, I think I like the PLOT of the book better, but the characters of the movie more. The book versions of the characters all speak in super-proper declarative sentences and are rather soppy. The movie characters feel like they have a bit more life. The only exception I feel to this is Book!Colonel and Book!Tibs (who is a girl). Their playful banter was funny.
Other observations:
- The story of book!Perdita is pretty much the missing gem. (For those out of the loop, there are two female adult dalmatians in the book: Missis, who is Pongo's wife and the birth mother of the puppies, and Perdita, a dog who ran away from her abusive owner after losing her own puppies and husband. She later becomes the puppies' wet nurse.) And I don't think I would have picked up the book if I hadn't spoiled myself and learned she had a super-happy ending to her sad story -- which is also amazing, because the stereotypical knowledge is that Disney deletes sad and upsetting parts of a story, not part of the happy ending. Plus ... she's liver-spotted! That's so precious.
Although I have to admit I still missed the presence of movie!Perdita. Missis is portrayed as a ninny and source of comic relief throughout the book. But movie!Perdita is badass.
- I get why Cruella's pet cat was cut out of the film. (The whole "Cruella drowned all my babies because they weren't purebred!" is a little gruesome). But not when the dogs destroy all of Cruella's fur coats ... that was awesome.
- I'm amazed at how much the Disney film changed the personalities of most of the characters and overall made the film a lot more action-oriented (although that's understandable) and yet kept the most random details. Stuff that's in the book includes: Lucky having a horseshoe pattern on his back, "What's my crime?", Cruella's house having a red interior. Even bits and pieces of the humans' dialogue in the book was used in the movie.
- It's weird that as an adult, I can still accept the talking dogs, but not the idea that Mr. Dearly (who is an accountant and not a musician in the book) is able to BALANCE ENGLAND'S BUDGET every year. That's just nonsense.
- There's a sequel to the book, but I don't think I'll be reading it. It involves the dogs somehow ascending to heaven to meet Sirius, the dog star. Very "Johnathan Livingston Dalmatian", it sounds like.
By the way, if you really want your mind blown, watch this: it's like that re-cut Shining trailer and yet it is REAL.
