So I won't ... for now. I'm somewhat out of clothes, y'see ...

Read that Golliwogg story referenced in LoEG. Still not sure why anyone wants to revive it. Besides the obvious racism (in addition to the Golly, there's also a Sambo and a weirdly white-looking Japanese toy in the story), the story is your typical, run-of-the-mill "your toys come to life when you're not there" deal. And I didn't really like the poetry style. It didn't flow very well and wasn't all that charming.

Of course, people think the Berenstein Bears suck, (Actually, there's some who say it's misandrist propaganda, if Wikipedia is to be believed.) and I don't. So who knows?

Did I ever tell you guys I listened to half of Darkly Dreaming Dexter on audiotape and really hated it? Well, I did. Seriously. That book was awful. And the audiobook broke my disc player, which makes it even more awful. I'm never reading the ending -- I spoiled myself on who the killer was and learned there's no level of idiocy the writer won't sink to.

Also, this totally describes the characterization of Dexter: from here.

If you want to make your character seem smart, then you could, if you weren’t very much of a writer, make everyone else very, very dumb. If you want to make your character seem strong, then you could, if you weren’t very much of a writer, surround that character with people who fall apart at the slightest stress.

The first sentence is DDD #1 EXACTLY. Everyone on Miami P.D. Stereotype Team, featuring Bitchy Latina Lieutenant, Creepy Asian and Angry, Burly Black Guy, and Dexter's sister.

Actually, his sister is probably the stupidest female character I've read in a book, ever. Here's a drinking game. Take a shot every time she says "JESUS, Dex," "God Damn it, Dex" or "I want out of vice and into homicide." How far will you get in the book? Probably not as far as me!

I would add that if you want to make your serial killer be the good guy, you just have him kill child molesting priests and evil nurses. I can't blame him, too much. I mean, they deserve to go but ... honestly ... do we need to use the ultimate cliches of serial killers? Mix it up a little? Evil male nurse? Child molesting nun? Woman who just likes to collect small intestines?

The evil nurse was pretty telling of the stupidity of the book. Said evil nurse at one point was killing Dexter's dad, who taught him how to be a serial killer for justice. When Deborah the Moron hears this she goes, "How can that be? She's a nurse!" ACK! What, do they live in a world where Misery was never written?

That was about when I dropped the book. Correction, that was when the book borked my CD player in my car. Fuck you, book.

I don't know why I felt like talking about that now. [sigh] Better do laundry.

Out of laundry? pixplzktxbai.

As for Dexter, the show is really worlds better than the book. The characters are less vapid, for one.

Sheesh. I'm not THAT out of laundry.

I have heard the show is better, yeah. I know from the little bit I watched of Six Feet Under that the star is a good actor.

He's incredible. The wife and I have been hooked to the show through both seasons, and I got her season 1 for Christmas.

Oh, damn. I was hoping to read the book after loving the show so much, but yowch, that sounds bad. The show is great - the characters are all so nuanced, with elements of good and bad. Debra, LaGuerta, and Doakes are all way more awesome, especially in the second season.

especially in the second season.

Considering the TV people decided to abandon the source material in the second season, that is SO telling.

But yeah, it's pretty bad. Dexter does his "I am a serial killer. I do not feel anything" spiel about once every 20 minutes on the audiotape. If you do read it, I'd get ready to skim.
