Well, you don't necessarily need death or explosions, but there should be tension of some sort. You can extend fights against the BBEG by having sorties with minions (acting alone or under orders). Then you could have some preliminary or 'testing' battle-- when either or both party isn't ready for a final showdown/confrontation.
If you do end "too quickly", just go back and look for slow spots or places where you could add a little for clarity or extra tension/sub-plots. You'll never be S. Meyer and I, for one, am glad of that! ;)
