Classic Disney
--------------
[x] 101 Dalmatians (1961) - I have ambivalent feelings about this now that I read the book, but I loved it as a kid.
[x] Alice in Wonderland (1951) - I like Disney heroines who don't have a love plot.
[x] Bambi (1942)
[x] Cinderella (1950) - I haven't seen this in ages, man.
[x] Dumbo (1941) - I liked it at the time. Thinking about it is weird. The drunk scene? The long stretches of time where not much happens? The racism? I don't know. It's kind of misery porn.
[x] Fantasia (1940) - BORING!
[x] Lady and the Tramp (1955) - Aw, I liked this one. I wanted all the dogs.
[x] Mary Poppins (1964)
[x] Peter Pan (1953) - I kind of hate Peter Pan. Like, I like the book because it's got a fucked-up and true view of childhood. But watching adaptations make me kind of sick. The only one I've really liked was Alan Moore/Melinda Gebbie's re-telling in Lost Girls. Yes, I'm serious.
[x] Pinocchio (1940) - I want to see this again, too. Although not enough to buy the DVD that's out.
[x] Sleeping Beauty (1959) - Seconding all the "BEAUTIFUL ANIMATION!" squeeing. And the fairies and Maleficent make up for the rather lame heroine.
[x] Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937) - I still say the best time I ever had watching this was when my Cousin David made fun of it.
[] Song of the South (1946) - I'd like to see this just to have context for what's in it.
12/13

Disney's Dark Age
-----------------
[x] The Aristocats (1970) - I don't know if I like this or not.
[] The Black Cauldron (1985) - Seen barely anything. My bother hated it.
[x] The Fox and the Hound (1981) - This was cute.
[x] The Great Mouse Detective (1986) - One of the best villains ever.
[x] The Jungle Book (1967) - I don't know if best songs ever, [livejournal.com profile] temperance_doll ... although I have a bad story about "Bear Necessities."
[x] The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh (1977) - DISNEY POOH WAS MY BABYHOOD. One of my first toys was Disney Pooh ... I love Disney Pooh. Logic or fidelity can't come into this one.
[x] Oliver and Company (1986) - First movie I ever saw in the theater. I don't remember it much at all.
[] Pete's Dragon (1977)
[x] Rescuers, The (1977) Seconding the bleh, although I think I like it better than the sequel.
[x] Robin Hood (1973) - It was okay. Rips off Jungle Book shamelessly though we all know now.
[x] The Sword In The Stone (1963) I don't know why I love this.
9/11

The Disney Renaissance
----------------------
[x] Aladdin (1992) - :-D
[x] Beauty and the Beast (1991) - I AM BELLE!
[x] A Goofy Movie (1995) - Don't love it, but it was a lot better than I expected. The whole family went to see it together and we were kind of holding hands and being all, "I LOVE YOU MOM/DAD" afterward. Yeah, I know.
[x] Hercules (1997) - Oh God. Haaaaaaate it. Hate it, hate it, hate it, hate it.
[x] Hunchback of Notre Dame, The (1996) - I still like it.
[x] The Lion King (1994) - I love it. But if they were going to expand it, I really wish they would have re-installed the Scar-hits-on-Nala song rather than that lame "Morning Report" song. (This is why I'm not allowed to make decisions on anything, I guess.)
[x] The Little Mermaid (1989) - Ah, childhood.
[x] Mulan (1998) - I WANT TO SEE THIS AGAIN.
[x] Pocahontas (1995) - Good songs. Great animation. FUCK THIS HORRIBLE, RACIST-ASS MOVIE.
[x] The Rescuers Down Under (1990) - See above. I like the scene where the snake keeps stealing the eggs, though.
[x] Tarzan (1999) - I liked it. Phil Collins' songs are kind of fail, though.
11/11

Disney's Modern Age
-------------------
[x] Atlantis: The Lost Empire (2001) - I didn't really like this, but I second [livejournal.com profile] temperance_doll on the awesome female characters. AWESOME HUMOROUS ENGINEERS FOR THE WIN.
[ ] Bolt (2008) - No. John Travolta makes me cringe.
[ ] Brother Bear (2003) - The ending to this sounds messed up.
[ ] Chicken Little (2005) - No. FUCK YOU.
[x] Dinosaur (2000) - Stupid story for a stupid movie that was only made because they thought up a new, pretty form of CGI. I'll second whatever Mr. Cranky (remember him?) said: "No writer ever wrote a new novel because he wanted to try out a new pen."
[ ] Emperor's New Groove, The (2000) - I am the only one who hasn't seen this.
[ ] Fantasia 2000 (2000) - No.
[ ] Home on the Range (2004) - NO.
[x] Lilo & Stitch (2002) - I liked this one.
[ ] Meet the Robinsons (2007)
[ ] Treasure Planet (2002) - I DON'T BELIEVE YOU.
3/11

Pixar
-----
[ ] A Bug's Life (1998) - The ants have FOUR ARMS? What is up with that?
[ ] Cars (2006)
[x] Finding Nemo (2003) - I don't love it quite as much as everyone else, but yeah.
[x] The Incredibles (2004) - Even realizing that the capes thing doesn't make sense when you give the girls HEELS to wear ... my love for this movie cannot be abated.
[ ] Monsters Inc. (2001) - Never saw this.
[ ] Ratatouille (2007)
[x] Toy Story (1995) - "The claw is our master. The claw chooses who will go and who will stay ..."
[x] Toy Story 2 (1999) - Liked it, too.
[x] Wall-E (2008) - OH MY GOD BEST THING EVER.
5/9

Don Bluth (a.k.a. THE GUY WHO FUCKING SCARES ME.)
---------
[x] All Dogs Go to Heaven (1989) - [scream!]
[x] An American Tail (1986) - I love this, scariness included.
[x] An American Tail: Fieval Goes West - But this kinda sucks.
[x] Anastasia (1997) - I like this, even if it is all bullshit.
[x] The Land Before Time (1988) - Remember the days when this was a stand-alone movie? Good times. Also, I never got the genders of the characters right when I was a kid.
[ ] The Pebble and the Penguin (1995)
[x] Rock-a-Doodle (1991) - Haaa. Whenever I read the Canterbury Tales I'm like, "Oh, Chanticleer. That's like Rock-a-Doodle!" The main character I love in this, too.
[x] The Secret of NIMH (1982) - [hides hides hides]
[ ] Thumbelina (1994) - I only saw a couple of minutes.
[ ] Titan AE (2000)
[ ] A Troll in Central Park (1994)
7/10

Claymation

[ ] Corpse Bride (2005) -
[ ] James and the Giant Peach (1996)
[x] Nightmare Before Christmas, The (1993) - So kooky.
[ ] Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit (2005)
[x] Coraline (2009) - Curse your Gaiman-hate, [livejournal.com profile] temperance_doll! This made me cry. [cuddles]
3/7

CGI Glut
---------------------
[x] Antz (1998) - Remember how this starred that guy who has sex with his daughter? Good times.
[ ] Happy Feet (2006)
[ ] Kung Fu Panda (2008)
[ ] Madagascar (2005)
[ ] Monster House (2006)
[ ] Over the Hedge (2006)
[ ] Polar Express, The (2004)
[x] Shrek (2001) - I love this movie, but I have to admit I don't know if it's been so good for our culture, you know?
[x] Shrek 2 (2004) - It was cute.
[ ] Shrek The Third - I'd still kind of like to see it, even though I know I'll regret it and fear it would encourage them to make another one.
3/10

Imports
--------
[ ] Arabian Knight (aka The Thief and the Cobbler) (1995)
[ ] The Last Unicorn (1982)
[ ] Light Years
[0] Triplets of Belleville, The (2003) - Liked most of what I saw.
[x] Persepolis (2007) - When you're talking black-and-white adaptations of black-and-white comics that have an enormous fidelity to the source material ... this kind of eats Sin City for breakfast. I'm just saying.
[ ] Waltz With Bashir (2008)
[0] Watership Down (1978) - Holy crap, what I remember of this was horrifying. Would like to see it again, though.
[ ] When the Wind Blows (1988)

3/16

Other Animated Movies I Can't Categorize

[ ] G.I. Joe: The Movie
[ ] Gobots: Battle of the Rock Lords
[ ] He-Man & She-Ra: The Secret of the Sword
[x] The Hobbit - I really liked this, but this movie is severely hampered by the lack of Beorn, who is the best damn character in any Middle Earth thing that is worth reading. Seriously.

[ ] Justice League: The New Frontier
[x] Lord of the Rings
[ ] Little Nemo: Adventures in Slumberland (1992)
[0] My Little Pony: The Movie - Oh God, I tried to watch it. It was really bad. I suspect the people who drew the ponies and the people who drew the villains didn't work together at all and didn't speak the same language and their courier spoke a different language entirely.

[x] Space Jam -- Haaa. I liked it at the time, but it was stupid. I love how in James Berardinelli's review he keeps calling Michael Jordan "His Airness" as in, "The Looney Toons make some jokes, but they spend most of their time bowing and genuflecting before His Airness."
[ ] Starchaser: The Legend of Orin
[ ] Superman: Doomsday

"Song of the South" was otherwise known as The Tale of Brer Rabbit. It's very politically incorrect now, tarbaby and all. You may remember the song, "Zippity Do Da, Zippity Ay".

You should watch Shrek 3. It's amusing, although not as good as 1, obviously.

Watership Down. You should read it: Robert Adams. Funny how it was always stuck in "Kids" movies because it's animated.

Howl's Moving Castle is good and not as tearful as other Miyazaki classics. Would you believe it-- this one has a happy ending!

You should see The Last Unicorn, and The Road to El Dorado. It's amazing Road was intended for children.

From: [identity profile] quietprofanity.livejournal.com

Yeah, I've heard quite a bit about the racist content. I still think it's weird how Disney brass is sort of like, "This doesn't exist!" but they still sell Uncle Remus stuff in Disney World.

I actually have Watership Down. Haven't gotten around to it yet, though.

The Road to El Dorado is that good? I heard about the slashiness but it always seemed so ... silly.

From: [identity profile] imayb1.livejournal.com

Yeah, Disney is a barrel of laughs sometimes. My father-in-law has an old 8mm of "Little Black Sambo". He refuses to let the kids watch it until they're old enough to understand the significance. As adults, we watched, aghast.

I wouldn't say Road to El Dorado is good, but it is very entertaining if you have at least one dirty-minded brain cell. It's very highly slashy and menage-leaning, and yes, silly.

From: [identity profile] temperance-doll.livejournal.com

Aw man, remember when that happened? And that happened? And that happened? It totally touched my heart.

- YES.

and, um I like Good Omens, although I suspect the bits I love best are the bits Gaiman had zero to do with (like the Richmal Crompton homage). I don't actually see how fangirls can be all Crowley/Aziraphale squee and miss the homophobia in the text, except that slash fangirls aren't known for their intelligence or their sophisticated grasp of gay politics.

You should watch Only Yesterday. Everyone I love should.

From: [identity profile] quietprofanity.livejournal.com

I knew you spoke my language!

Re: Good Omens. I remember you talking about the Them/Just William stuff (since we don't get that in America as far as I know I found it very interesting). I'm not much for the Crowley/Aziraphale stuff ... at all. Not that I have something against it but I don't see the appeal other than "He's a devil. He's an angel. Together they fight crime have buttsex!" (Although I did ask for an Aslan and Crowley conversation fanfic once.) My favorite parts of Good Omens were Anathamea/Newton, the Horsemen and the stuff with the screaming neighbor ... whoever that was.

I don't think I picked up on homophobia in the text, but it has been a couple of years. Can you elaborate?

Only Yesterday sounds really great. I'll see what I can do.
