Okay, I heard about the ending in advance. I went in being skeptical but trying to like it and overall ... I did.

I think the worst thing you can say about it is the plot and the characterization of pretty much everyone but Dr. Horrible was pretty lazy. I don't think this is some sort of sexism at work as it is a "story takes a back seat to the songs/gags/oooh-look-what-we-can-do-on-a-small-budget" philosophy. So ... depth pretty much got thrown out the window with big rocks attached to it.

I get why Penny had to die. Super-villains don't GET happy endings and all but ... yeah, woman-as-plot-object-for-men is not so great.

Still, I thought the work overall was ... charming. I think everyone working on that project was having fun. Felicia Day and especially Nathan Fillion really elevated their characters. I actually liked Nathan better than Neil Patrick Harris. The songs were fun in context, even if they're not the most memorable later. The gags are good. Special effects/sets were fairly decent, if not 100% professional. And ... well, yeah.

It feels like a nice little trifle. No more, no less. It wasn't must-see (although my brother must have thought it was -- he called me up today and was like, "WATCH THIS NOW!") but I'm glad I saw it.

I don't think the opening is very strong, but by the middle of Act I it got better. You didn't miss much in the long run, though. I maintain it was basically an interesting experiment.
