Man, is it just me or is Firestar's costume looking really boring lately?

I'm feelin' the rage building around this, although I'm not feeling it for myself. One because my heart has hardened into a black rock of cynicism, but two because I feel like this has been something that's been passed around the Marvel Comics HQ for awhile and it's finally come to fruition just because it's BEEN THERE for awhile. I remember [livejournal.com profile] papajoemambo suggesting to me that this was an idea they had, although I thought it turned into Alias. I'm guessing they've just gotten stuck on it and want to see it done through hell or highwater, just because it's there. That's probably why the Watchmen movie got made.

But why now, really? I mean, Sex and the City has been off the air for five years now. Combining it with superheroes has already been done and didn't their last sexy girls book with the Black Cat and an underused African-American heroine not do so well and was not helped because Marvel kind of showed it didn't really give a shit what the female audience thought.

I don't know. I kind of say what I've said when I read the horrible Mary Jane novel and the I-remain-unimpressed by it Mary Jane/Mary Jane: Homecoming/Spider-Man Loves Mary Jane series: if I wanted to read romance I would read romance. I mean, I don't think I would love Sex and the City but I figure they know what they're doing.

One thing that stands out to me is how random and yet completely redundant that team line-up is. (And going back to Firestar's original costume makes her look indistinguishable from Hellcat, wtf.)

Anything with an all-female cast is going to be compared to Sex and the City by male writers forever and ever until the end of time. Because there is just so much overlap between female comic fans and Sex and the City fans.

Between this and the new line of "female products"...screw it, Marvel's never going to get its head out of its ass re: women comic fans unless there's a massive regime change.

I remember an original lineup had She-Hulk and Ms. Marvel. She-Hulk at least makes sense for a book like this. And yeah, Hellcat and Firestar look far too much alike.

Yeah, really. I mean, I get that it's a buzzword but, blah ...

Also, would it be too much to ask for a book like this to be written by a woman or is that just crazy talk?

I'm worried about that myself. I like what Bendis has done for a lot of superheroines (and he's continued on some of the work Busiek has done) but so much of it ... ugh.

Bendis has done good for women? Rape Trigger writing Bendis? That asshat? Really? >_>

Not that I'm dismissing what you're saying, but it's kinda shocking to me, considering what he did to Tigra and any other woman extra I've seen in comics, who do nothing but shout Aieee when in trouble.

And yeah, Marvel's dumb and stupid. I don't see any relation in that lineup, although it's good to see the old Captain Marvel again in her kickbutt outfit. It honestly feels like another stupid, tired attempt at Heroes for Hire, which I WAS going to collect, since it had Misty Knight and Colleen but the stupid cheesecake in nearly every other frame turned me off of it bigtime.

Of course, that must make me abnormal and not part of the regular throe of testosterone poisoned mouth breathers that Marvel normally panders this idiocy to... (Note: Not bitter or angry about BND/OMD).

Well, the Tigra thing I never read. He said it was meant to be shocking, not titillating. Others saw it differently. So for now I have no opinion on it other than his reaction to the controversy was rather dismissive and I didn't appreciate it.

In terms of women, I do like that he revived a lot of women who people were doing near-nothing with, like the Spider-Women. And while Busiek was the one who originally brought Carol Danvers back from space purgatory, he's made her into a major player in the Marvel Universe and his protegee wrote her. I also really think Jessica Jones was a great addition. I know for some that may not excuse Tigra or Scarlet Witch, but I don't know. Ms. Marvel is one of my favorites ever (she was even my old screenname) so that means a lot to me. (And I have no problem with her being on the wrong side in Civil War, but that's another story.)

I'm getting that vibe, too. And you know what was weird about that book, now that I think of it: no conflict. None of the characters had any personality clashes that I remember other than "Oooh, Black Tarantula [or whatever] is kind of brutal. Oh well, let's move this plot along." I'm worried this is going to do the same thing. I mean, there are good ways to do this concept ... I'm just not sure they're going to utilize them.

A female perspective would be nice for a mini-series about what "it's really like" to be a woman and a superhero in the industry. But they probably wouldn't have given the book the hot 'n sudsy "girls get in their underwear and have sexy pillow fights when they're alone together" view of women's relationships that Marvel seems to want.

I never liked Firestar's original costume. The only one of her's that I liked was the one with the jacket that she wore from mid-NW vol. 1 until she joined the Avengers.

That one's not bad. I kind of liked the cleavage one with the flames, but I can get if I'm a minority on that one.

That one was actually a gift from the Wasp, but Firestar herself didn't like it. I think she wore it that one time because her other costume got shredded.

This one actually rocks, one of the few, good, jacket costumes to come out of the 90s.

I remember that VANCE liked the cleavage one *L* I think she actually added a turtleneck or something under it so that her boobs weren't hanging out.

Speaking of awful costumes, George Perez really did my boy Justice wrong with that awful "J" belt buckle one. UGH.
