One can enjoy a work with stereotypes for its other aspects, and I think it's totally okay, so long as you recognize the stereotypical aspects of a work.
HOWEVER, that does not mean that you have to accept it whenever someone makes an accusation of stereotyping and you think it's unfair. You tell me that robot maid anime is misogynistic, and I'll be arguing with you. And I won't be able to promise that it won't get heated. People care about art, whether it's the Sistine Chapel or Foamy the Squirrel. Everyone likes stories. Stories mean important things to people for a variety of reasons.
If we get mad, it is okay, so long as you AND I, both recognize that the debate is always important.
It is wrong to say that if someone is defending a work it's because they don't care about the issues involved. It is ALSO wrong to say someone's only defending a work because they're a tightwad PC freak or whatever. To be dismissive is bad. To be dismissive is worse than just getting angry about an issue, because it stifles the always-important debate. We should always think.
Still, I do think that if someone has concerns and they're closer to the subject than you are ... say, an American Indian complaining about school mascots and you're white ... you should maybe take a closer look at what they're saying. You don't have to agree carte blanche, but you SHOULD recognize that they're coming from a viewpoint where it's more likely for them to be sensitive about a subject. And telling them to "get over it" if they're obviously hurt by something makes you a douche.
(Although if you're both of the same minority group, ALL BETS ARE OFF!!!! :-P)
