sarajayechan brought the story of the girl who committed suicide based on the vindictive parents of her ex-friend to my (and others) attention here. I was reading Kevin Smith's blog today, though, and thought he had an interesting take on it.
I'm not sure I'm into what Kevin has to say. I mean, yeah there are crazy moms, and sure he 'says' he's not trying to be sexist, but please (I think saying broad repeatedly tosses that out the window for me). He seems to have forgotten about all those crazy dads who live vicariously through their son's sports/music/etc achievements. What about all those fist fights at games over kids play time? That's just one example.
Some people are just nuts. One life isn't enough for them so they have to live another one through their child. Or maybe they didn't get a chance to do all the things they wanted to, so they go overboard in trying to ensure their children do.
I don't think it is specific to gender.
In any case, what happened is pretty screwed. For an adult to knowingly deceive and harass a child is unconscionable, and disgusting. I read something on CNN the other day about how the community has taken an approach not used much these days and are basically shunning the family. Seems fair in some ways.
Yeah, that's the one part of the post I really didn't like. (I even thought of the insane sports dads after I posted it, too). I did think his story of the note was pretty inspiring, however.

Good for them, I think.
